Stop Dogs Barking

How To Stop The Nuisance Of Your Dog Barking

On the face of it, why would you want to try and stop your dog from barking? After all, isn't that one of the reasons you got a dog in the first place? I get peace of mind knowing that I get warning of anyone approaching the house. My dogs, Kira the Rottweiler and Max the Bernese Mountain Dog, give me plenty of warning if someone comes near my property. In fact by the tone and frequency of the barking, I can gauge exactly where the "intruder" is - whether on the street, on the drive or at the front door!

People get into trouble when they have no control over their dog barking and it starts to become a nuisance, both to themselves and, more importantly, their neighbours. Nothing is more annoying than hearing a nearby dog yapping away continuously and for no apparent reason. If this barking then continues into the night, problems with the neighbours are inevitable. At best the neighbours will complain to you and at worst your dog could be reported to the local authority for creating a noise nuisance. I'm sure you'll agree that's not a pleasant position to be in.

We don't want to stop your dog from barking completely - after all, his barking is a great deterrent to burglars, and unwanted visitors. What we want to do is temper and control it.

So how do we do this? How does a dog's natural inclination to guard his territory become such a problem and what can we do to prevent or control it?

I'll cover this in two parts: preventing it ever happening, and stopping it if you already have the problem. By far the best way is to never let your dog develop the problem in the first place! Teaching your puppy that barking for no reason is unacceptable is very easy - he doesn't need to un-learn anything. If you already have a nuisance barker, don't despair; it is perfectly possible to solve the problem. It will just take longer.

I am a real person with real dogs. I have been training dogs for over 20 years and have learnt to deal with all the common dog training problems you are facing. Let me share that information with you.
